Tracking progress beyond the scales.
It’s something I feel really passionate about because I see it time and time again - women
stepping on the scales, seeing a number they don’t like and instantly feeling deflated.
But here’s the truth: The scales only tell a tiny part of your story.
As we move through midlife, our bodies are changing - hormonally, metabolically and physically. We can be getting stronger, leaner, fitter and more energised without that number moving much at all.
Why the Scales Can Be
Misleading
- Muscle weighs more than fat (by volume) - so if you’re strength training (which you should be 💪), your body composition can improve massively while your weight stays the same or even increases slightly.
- Hormones and water retention can make the scales fluctuate day to day, especially around perimenopause and menopause.
- Stress, sleep, and hydration all impact scale weight - but they don’t
reflect your actual progress.
Better Ways to Track Progress...
Here are some of my favourite ways to measure how far you’ve come - inside and out:
✅ Progress photos – Take a front, side and back photo every 4–6 weeks. You’ll be amazed at what you notice that the mirror misses day to day.
✅ Measurements – Use a tape measure around your waist, hips, thighs and arms. Inches lost
tell the real story of body recomposition.
✅ How your clothes fit – That pair of jeans or fitted top never lies!
✅ Strength gains – Notice what you can lift now versus a month ago. More reps, more weight, or better form = real progress.
✅ Energy and mood – Track how you feel. Better sleep, fewer aches, more confidence - that’s transformation you can’t weigh.
✅ Consistency streaks – Celebrate
showing up for yourself. You don’t need perfection; you need persistence.
