Hi
You’ve probably heard it a thousand times: "Just eat less and move more." It’s one of those one-size-fits-all phrases that’s become common advice for anyone looking to lose weight or improve their fitness.
But here's the thing - it’s not that simple, especially for women over 40.
As we age, our bodies change in ways that make
this advice less effective, and sometimes even harmful. I want to share why taking this to heart could lead to more frustration than progress.
Let’s break it down:
Food Is Fuel - Now More Than Ever
Your body needs nutrients, especially as you get older. While you might be tempted to drastically cut calories to lose weight, this approach can backfire. Cutting back too much can leave you feeling fatigued, reduce muscle mass and make it
harder to maintain energy levels for your workouts. Instead of focusing on eating less, aim to nourish your body with balanced, nutrient-rich meals. Think lean proteins, healthy fats, fibre-rich carbs and plenty of vitamins and minerals. The key is to eat smart, not less, so your body has the fuel it needs to thrive.
2. Pushing Harder Won’t Always Work
You may feel like you need to work out twice as hard to see results, but over-exercising can actually
backfire. After 40, recovery becomes just as important as the workout itself. Overdoing it at the gym can lead to exhaustion, burnout, or even injury.
Your muscles and joints need more time to recover now than they did in your 20s or 30s. Plus, along with fuel, rest days are crucial for reducing stress on your body and allowing your muscles to grow and repair. Otherwise you will feel like you’re running on empty. Listen to your body, and aim for workouts that build strength, flexibility
and endurance - without leaving you feeling depleted. Exercise should make you feel good and energised, not run down and worn out!
3. Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life
The stress of under-eating and over-exercising can mess with your hormones. Increased cortisol, the stress hormone, can lead to weight gain (especially around the belly), disrupted sleep, irregular cycles and just feeling run-down.
Your hormones are in a delicate balance, and
nourishing your body properly while allowing for rest is essential for keeping them in check. Eating well, exercising in moderation and prioritising sleep can all help regulate your hormones and improve your overall well-being.
4. Health Is a Lifelong Journey - Sustainability Is Key
There’s no finish line when it comes to our health. It’s not about quick fixes or extreme diets - it’s about creating sustainable habits that will keep you feeling your best
for the rest of your life. Our bodies need consistency and care over time and small, steady changes make a bigger impact than any rapid, short-term solution. Remember, long and steady wins the race. Focus on building healthy habits you can maintain for the long run, so you can thrive at any age.
The Key? Consistency and Self-Care
At this stage of life, it’s not about going to extremes. It’s about creating a sustainable, balanced lifestyle
that supports your energy, your mood and your health. Small, consistent changes make a much bigger impact over time than quick-fix diets or all-out workout regimes.
I’m here to help you find that balance and create a routine that makes you feel strong, energised and confident.
