Hi
Â
Ah, the holiday season! Twinkling lights, laughter with friends and family and delicious food everywhere you turn. For women over 40, the holidays bring unique joys - but they can also bring some unique challenges, especially when it comes to staying on track with health and wellness goals.
Â
Let’s be honest: midlife brings changes to our bodies that can make
it harder to bounce back after indulgent seasons. But here’s the good news - this doesn’t mean you have to choose between enjoying the holidays and staying healthy. With a little intention, you can celebrate fully and still feel vibrant and strong heading into the New Year.
Â
Here’s how:
Â
1. The “Decide and Enjoy” Approach: Balance Without Guilt
As women over 40, we know that all-or-nothing thinking rarely works long-term. Instead, try a
balanced approach: choose your indulgences ahead of time.
- Is there a special family meal you’re looking forward to? Enjoy it fully without guilt.
- For smaller gatherings, prioritise lighter, nutrient-packed options to stay on track.
This approach lets you savour what matters most while keeping your overall goals intact.
2. Keep Moving, Even in Small Ways
Staying active doesn’t have to mean sticking to a rigid workout
routine, especially during this busy season. Instead, aim for consistency with simple, enjoyable activities:
- Take a brisk 10-minute walk around your local area to admire holiday lights.
- Do a quick Pilates session to stretch and strengthen your body.
- Dance to your favourite holiday tunes while prepping meals!
For women over 40, movement is key to maintaining energy, reducing stress and supporting metabolism - so find moments of joy in staying
active.
3. Mindful Eating: Savour the Season
One of the simplest but most powerful strategies is mindful eating. As we age, digestion can slow down and overeating can leave us feeling uncomfortable or sluggish. Instead:
- Focus on smaller portions of the foods you love and really savour each bite.
- Pause between servings to check in with your body and avoid the “overstuffed” feeling.
Mindful eating allows you to enjoy
the season’s flavours while honouring your body’s needs.
