Hi
When we set out on the second leg of our Greek trip, little did we know that our journey would take an unexpected and thrilling turn. The idea of moving to Greece when we retire has always been a dream for us. We love Greece - the sun, the sea, the food, the culture - and we have been fortunate enough to visit many of its beautiful islands over the
past 26 years. This time our adventure took us to the Greek mainland, specifically Nafplio in the stunning Peloponnese region, as we were accepted to participate in the TV program "A Place in the Sun."
The Big News: Filming 'A Place in the Sun'
Our journey began with a whirlwind of excitement and last-minute planning. Just five days before the start of filming, we received the news that our application to be on "A Place in the Sun" had been accepted. We
were ecstatic! The opportunity to search for a home in Greece with the potential benefit of the Golden Visa, allowing us to stay longer than the current 90-day limit, was too good to pass up.
The timing, however, was a bit manic. We had just finished our holiday in Tilos and instead of heading home as planned, we embarked on a new adventure to the Peloponnese. Our travel day was a marathon of ferry rides, taxis and a plane journey, starting at 4 am and finally arriving at our hotel at 5
pm. No time to rest - just a quick change and straight into filming.
The Filming Experience
The next five days were a whirlwind of activity, as we were shown five different properties. The experience was amazing, though it was far from a holiday. The crew was wonderful, making us feel welcome and relaxed despite our nerves. Being filmed was definitely out of our comfort zone, but the crew’s support made all the difference.
We were exhausted,
nervous and excited all at once. Each day was packed with house viewings, discussions and filming. We fell in love with the Peloponnese, an area we had not explored before and quickly realised it offered the year-round living we desired - something not always available on the Greek islands.
Stepping Out of Our Comfort Zone
This entire experience reminded us of an important life lesson: sometimes we have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable in order
to achieve our dreams. Just as in fitness, where pushing our limits helps us grow stronger, stepping out of our comfort zone can lead to incredible opportunities and personal growth.
When we challenge ourselves, whether it’s trying a new workout, taking on a new project, or in our case, being filmed for a TV show, we open ourselves up to new experiences and possibilities. This trip was a perfect example of that. We had to adapt quickly, embrace the unknown and stay positive despite the
challenges.
Enriching Our Lives Through New Experiences
Every new experience adds richness to our lives. This adventure in the Peloponnese has given us a deeper appreciation for the region and reinforced our love for Greece. It also taught us that sometimes, the journey can lead us to unexpected and wonderful destinations.
Even when we think we know what we want, like finding the perfect retirement home, we might discover new possibilities along
the way. Allowing ourselves to try new things, even when they feel uncomfortable, can lead to growth and new perspectives. It’s a reminder that life’s path is rarely straight and that the detours often bring the most rewarding experiences.
Seeking Sunshine and a Better Quality of Life
The past year in the UK has been particularly hard. The cold and miserable weather has taken a toll on us. I love the sun - I need the sun. I feel more alive and energetic
when it's warm, and I don't feel like we get to do as much when it's cold, dark and dreary. Even this past spring and summer in the UK was awful, with most of the year requiring layers upon layers of clothing - definitely not fun.
This longing for sunshine and a better quality of life has fuelled our desire to eventually retire or at least spend the winter months in Greece. We feel that we do more, live more and enjoy life to its fullest in the warmth and light of the
Mediterranean.
What’s Next?
As for whether we found our dream property, you’ll have to wait until the show airs next year to find out! Regardless of the outcome, this experience has been invaluable. We’ve fallen in love with the Peloponnese and look forward to exploring it further.
We’ll continue to visit Greece, discovering new islands and regions and soaking in all the beauty and culture this wonderful country has to offer. Our adventure is
far from over and we’re thrilled to see where it takes us next.
Stay tuned for more updates on our journey and remember - sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to the most amazing adventures.
